Miss Florence Griswold’s Recipe: One pint water, one half-pound butter, three-quarters pound of flour, ten eggs. Boil the water and butter together; stir in the flour while boiling; then let it cool, stirring it; add the eggs, well beaten, with a small teaspoon of soda. Drop them on tins and bake thirty minutes.

Inside: One cup flour, two cups sugar, one quart milk, four eggs. Boil the milk, beat the flour, sugar, and eggs together and stir into milk while boiling, until sufficiently scalded, then season it with lemon. When the cakes are baked open them and put in as much of the mixture as you can.
