What does a bed rug from Illinois, and a sampler from Ohio, and a silk embroidered picture from Oregon have in common? All three have their roots in the rich artistic heritage of New London County women. Schoelewer, author of Connecticut Needlework: Women, Art, Family, uses family history to tease out “hidden ties” that connect quite different types of needlework, stretching from the 17th century into the 19th. Together, needlework and family history lead us to women’s stories that have long gone unnoticed—often hidden in plain sight—waiting to be discovered.
