Black American Artists: From Subject Matter to Makers

Virtual $75 (members $65)

Mary Kordak, Professor of Art History, University of New Haven

The art of Black artists is diverse and deeply personal, ranging from the purely representational to the conceptual. Black men and women have been making fine art in the United States for over 200 years but, most remain anonymous to both Black and white audiences. This course examines the art and lives of several Black artists. Their life stories provide narratives into the social and cultural constructs that supported or hindered them. The paintings, sculpture, and works on paper Black artists created visually document a broader more nuanced understanding of how these talented artists survived in a racially polarized United States.
