Deconstructing Dickens’ “A Christmas Carol”
Dr. Mark J. Schenker, Independent Book Talk Leader
$10 (Members 10% discount)
Schenker, formerly of Yale College, will discuss Dickens’ most popular story as a reflection of its time and as a work for all time. The novella A Christmas Carol was published on December 19, 1843, selling out by Christmas Eve. Thirteen additional printings sold out within the year. In 1849, Dickens began doing public readings of the story, altering his voice for the various characters. He performed more than 170 of these dramatic readings in the next 20 years, right up to just three months before his death in 1870.
